What Will You Do When You Come to the Water’s Edge?

Joshua—whom God appointed to lead Israel after Moses—gave the people this instruction:

When ye are come to the brink of the water of Jordan, ye shall stand still in Jordan.” (Joshua 3:8)

It’s possible the hymn writer who penned “Be Still and Know That I Am God” drew inspiration from this verse.

The Jordan River presented a major challenge for Israel. They had no boats, no bridge, and no way across. Humanly speaking, it was an impossible situation—an obstacle with no clear solution. Yet God’s Word shows us again and again that when circumstances reach the right point, God steps in and changes everything.

Charles “Tremendous” Jones, known for his motivational speaking and writing on success, once said, “When I start my day, I know that sooner or later I will encounter a big problem. So when my problem comes, I say to myself, ‘This is exactly what I expected.’ Then I deal with it and move on toward the goals I’ve set for the day.”

Jesus Himself told us that the world would be full of trouble. But He followed that warning with this promise:

“Be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

Because He has overcome, we can claim victory and move forward to greater things.

Obstacles are often opportunities in disguise. And remember: “The person who says it can’t be done usually gets run over by someone who is doing it.”
